Safer waters
Summerhead! Aside from the title, the song does sound like summer. In this song, the pop influences of the time truly shine through. The instrumental of Summerhead reminds me of “Summertime” by The Sundays; They are both romantic songs about the lucidness of summer love. Or at least one of them is. The interesting thing about all songs from the Cocteau Twins’ discography is that one is able to interpret whatever Elizabeth is saying however the listener likes.
However, Sumerhead is less about summer and more about the lucidness that comes after taking the rose colored glasses off after a relationship. The speaker feels safer by not being influenced by love or infatuation. The lyrics “Safe at last / Seeing my thoughts in order” point towards the resolution the speaker experiences as she is able to think clearly and critically about her past relationship.
